The goodness of humanity

Every now and then, I start to lose faith in the goodness of humanity. Then a story like this one (as reported by MSNBC) comes along and my faith in the human race is restored.

Cabbies strikes gold for returning lost diamonds

Wow! A cabbie finds more than a quarter of a million dollars worth of diamonds and he returns them. His honesty is rewarded. It just goes to show you that the most humble among us are sometimes the most decent, honest, good people that we might ever encounter.

Question: If you found a ton of diamonds in the back of your cab, would you return them? How long would you search before you found their rightful owner? And what does your answer say about you?

  1. A homeless man wouldn't loose a ton of diamonds so he/she must be rich/corrupt anyway. I think I would prefer to keep and sell them in parts but since I am not much of a maffia person I would throw them into the canal in a while because of my sleeplesness..

  2. Okay, so maybe you are deeper than me and your response to my post was fraught with deeper meaning... But the cabbie wasn't homeless - just doing an honest day's work before going home to the wife and kiddies. Nor was the jeweler who lost the diamonds homeless - just careless.

And if you're going to throw the diamonds into the canal, then why not give them back to the person who lost them? Wouldn't you gain just as much satisfaction in doing something that was meaningful to someone, rather than wasting them in the river?

  3. As far as I'm concerned, diamonds an gold are a waist anyway because they cause so much trouble.

But am I mr. perfect and wouldn't have second thoughts? Sure not, still have a long way to go..

  4. No doubt I would have returned them. But my reason for returning them may not be so honorable; I would return the diamonds for the selfish reason that they would become a burden to me. I would always be worrying and thinking about whether someone would come looking for them or if they would know that they left it in my cab. Peace of mind to me is worth more than diamonds. I would say that my answer reveals that maybe I am more selfish than I would like to believe about myself.

  5. Nova, I agree with you. My Catholic guilt complex would force me to return the diamonds as well. Although beautiful, they'd also become a burden to me.

I don't think your reaction shows that you're more selfish than you'd like to believe - it shows that you have morals and values and were raised to know the difference between right and wrong. :)

  6. I would return it only if I can find the rightful owner. Will never give it to the cops. If I find the rightful owner good I will give it, no way will I keep lost stuff......thinking about it everyday would probably kill me.......if I can't find the person I would probably give it to a charity organization.
